Tennis Elbow
Tennis Elbow is a degenerative/ inflammatory condition involving the outer (lateral) portion of the elbow. It tends to start as an aching sensation around the elbow and typically radiates to the mid portion of the forearm. It is caused by an inflammation of the tendons on the outer aspect of the elbow. The pain tends to be more pronounced with subtle movements such as turning a door knob or lifting a coffee cup. Initial treatment includes activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication and corticosteroid injection. If the condition persists I add physical therapy and bracing. In refractory cases, I proceed with an MRI and occasionally surgery is required to repair the tendon using a procedure called a lateral epicondyle repair. This is done as an outpatient procedure.
